DONE DEAL: Coventry City defeat Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday, secures loan deal for Rangers Rabbi Matondo
Coventry City are understood to be set to take Rangers forward Rabbi Matondo on loan for the
second half of the 2024/25 season.
The 24-year-old winger, who mainly operates on the left but can play on the right and as a second striker,
has been limited to six Scottish Premier appearances so far this term under manager and former Sky Blues midfielder Philippe Clement, but has contributed two goals and two assists in that time.
A hamstring injury has also hampered his progress this term.
It’s understood that a deal could see the player join on an initial loan with a buy option in the region of
£2million in the summer.
Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday have also been linked with the player this month but
sources north of the border have confirmed to CoventryLive that Frank Lampard is set to secure Matondo as
his first signing.
Capped 12 times by Wales, Matondo is an international teammate of Jay Dasilva who started his
career at Cardiff City before being snapped up by Manchester City for a compensation fee,
where he got to know Joel Latibeadiere. He was then sold to Bundesliga side Schalke 04, aged 19,
for a reported fee rising to £11million where he played with Haji Wright.
Loan spells at Stoke City and Cercle Bruges followed before a reported £1.8m move to
Rangers in the summer of 2022. Alhough he didn’t score in his first full season at Ibrox,
the right-footed wide man scored six times in all competitions last term,
including a goal in a 2-2 Champions League draw with PSV.
Frank Lampard has admitted that he would like to draft in “help” on the wings to help City through the busy schedule when he continues to be without the services of Ephron Mason-Clark and Haji Wright – both of whom play on the left flank – as well as add an option and competition for Tatsuhiro Sakamoto on the right.
