Sunderland target ‘gifted’ £7m star as Patrick Roberts comparison emerges amid transfer speculation.
Patrick Roberts Compared to Sunderland Target Louie Barry
Patrick Roberts has long been a respected player, possessing a rare touch of star quality. While he may not always showcase it consistently, he remains a vital figure for Sunderland.
The 27-year-old winger has been with the Black Cats since January 2022, making Sunderland the club he has represented the most in his career. Having previously played for Fulham, Manchester City, and Celtic, Roberts has now amassed 123 appearances for Sunderland, scoring nine goals and providing 15 assists.
After a disappointing 2023/24 season, Roberts has regained form under Regis Le Bris, recording two goals and five assists in 26 Championship games this campaign.
However, Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman is eyeing Aston Villa’s Louie Barry, a player who could challenge Roberts for his spot in the starting XI during the second half of the 2024/25 season.
Barry Draws Comparisons to Roberts
Sunderland have been linked with Barry for weeks, but Aston Villa are reportedly keen on securing a new contract for him before considering a loan move. This makes a permanent January transfer unlikely.
Former Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton recently compared Barry to Roberts while discussing Celtic’s reported interest in the 20-year-old forward. Speaking to Glasgow World, Hutton said:
“I think he is a lot like Patrick Roberts. I’m not saying they’re identical, but he has a similar style. He’s technically very gifted, gets on the ball, and makes things happen.”
Barry is reportedly valued at around £7 million, though Villa have not officially set a price tag.
Roberts Responds to His Critics
Despite showing improvement this season, Roberts has still faced criticism. However, he recently addressed his doubters, acknowledging his own expectations:
“I know I could probably do a lot more. I’m very hard on myself. My priority is Sunderland winning games, and I’ll take that over individual stats any day. But I know goals and assists help us win, so I understand that too. I believe in myself and want to reach levels I’ve never reached before.”
With limited options on the right wing, the potential arrival of Barry could push Roberts to elevate his game further.
Sunderland will return to Championship action against Derby County on Tuesday night.
