Birmingham City had been linked with FC Heidenheim’s Lennard Maloney but the American is now set to join FSV Mainz, as per Florian Plettenberg.

Birmingham City are looking to kick on with their promotion bid with the help of some extra additions. BCFC were highly active in the summer, so business is unlikely to be extensive at St. Andrew’s.

However, there is still scope for new faces to join Chris Davies’ ranks as they look to build a strong squad ready to compete in the Championship should they return there.

One man the Blues had been linked with is American midfielder Lennard Maloney, who currently plays in the Bundesliga with FC Heidenheim.

However, links were viewed as ambitious at the time, and it seems the Birmingham City target is indeed set to head elsewhere as he approaches the end of his contract with Heidenheim.

Writing on X, Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg has said that Maloney is poised to complete a move from Heidenheim to fellow Bundesliga side FSV Mainz with immediate effect. Given his contract situation, he moves for a nominal fee of less than 1m initially, though bonuses are in place.

Staying in the Bundesliga

The finances behind the deal for Maloney won’t have been a problem for Birmingham City. They’ve shown on plenty of occasions that they have the money to pay both fees and wages for players from higher levels.

However, tempting a player to drop from the Bundesliga to League One always felt like a step too far.

Maloney has been playing regularly in the top-flight of German football, so even with the ambitious project the Blues are embarking on, they arguably would have been hard-pressed to sign the 25-year-old even if they were in the Championship.

Business to date

Only one player has come through the doors at Birmingham City this month, that being defender Grant Hanley.

His signing paved the way for Dion Sanderson to move back to the Championship, reuniting with John Eustace at Blackburn Rovers. Josh Williams and Brandon Khela have headed out on loan, joining Gateshead and Bradford City respectively.

BCFC have struck a pre-contract deal to sign German defender Phil Neumann in the summer to. He’ll arrive at the end of the season when his deal with Hannover 96 expires.
