“Heartbroken” Wilson Isidor issues emotional social media apology to Sunderland after breaking down in tears.
Wilson Isidor missed two late penalties for Sunderland in their match against Burnley.
Sunderland striker Wilson Isidor has apologized after missing two late penalties, costing the Black Cats a chance to move into second place in the Championship.
In a dramatic finish at Turf Moor, Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford saved both of Isidor’s penalties, first in the 86th minute and then in added time. Despite Sunderland’s efforts, Burnley fans celebrated their eighth goalless draw of the season. Isidor was left in tears at the final whistle, feeling the weight of two missed opportunities that could have seen Sunderland leapfrog Burnley in the table.
On loan from Zenit, Isidor turned to social media after the game to express his regret. The forward had a second chance to score after his first penalty was saved, but the outcome remained the same.
He wrote: “It feels like a big slap in the face, the worst day of my life, because everyone knows how much I love this club. I apologize to my teammates, every fan, and everyone at the club for what happened tonight. I feel really ashamed, but I promise I’ll come back stronger. See you Tuesday, HWTL, and thanks for all the messages of support from the real ones.”
Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris refused to blame the 24-year-old, hoping the experience would make Isidor stronger. He also praised the team for their efforts despite the missed chances.
“He’s disappointed, like the rest of the team,” Le Bris said. “Football is like this. You make decisions, mistakes happen, and you learn. That’s how you improve. We can take the positives from this. It’s a tough place to play. We struggled early on but became more aggressive and created several big chances. We’re disappointed we didn’t score, but it shows our consistency and quality. It’s a good sign for us.”
