Headline News: Moyes is “under no illusions” following Everton’s comeback loss.
Following Everton’s 1-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa on Wednesday, David Moyes admitted that he had seen the enormity of the task before of him in keeping the club in the Premier League.
Ollie Watkins scored the only goal in Moyes’ first encounter back at Goodison Park, extending the Toffees’ goal drought.
Sean Dyche was fired as Everton manager after a record of no victories and one goal in his last five games in charge.
Everton, who have not been out of the top division in 71 years, are now only one point and two places above the relegation zone after their defeat.
“I have no illusions about the task I have to accomplish. We couldn’t score a goal tonight either,” Moyes added. “We need to show a lot more quality on the ball and play better with it. That’s what I told the players. We just didn’t play well enough or keep the ball as well as we should have.”
Moyes had previously stated that he trusted Dominic Calvert-Lewin to score the goals that would lift Everton out of difficulty.
However, the former England international squandered a golden opportunity to equalise in stoppage time, prolonging his goalless streak since the two sides last met in September.
“I told Dom to try if he could get himself into scoring positions. “I believe he can demonstrate to everyone that he is a very hardworking centre-forward,” Moyes remarked.
“He had a massive miss at the end, which was arguably his biggest chance. Overall, we had our opportunities; they did not have many at all. “We just didn’t finish it.”
Victory moves Villa up to seventh place, three points behind the top four.
Unai Emery was thrilled to snap a Premier League away win drought that had lasted since October.
“This victory is highly significant. We began the year winning at home, in the Premier League, and in the FA Cup. We were in a poor spell and needed to break it,” the Spaniard explained. “To get three points here is very difficult and we’re very happy.”
