Warriors Acquire 2-Time All-Star in Major Trade Proposal

The Golden State Warriors (19-20) are aiming to reach .500 for the fifth time this season when they face the Minnesota Timberwolves (21-18) on the road on Wednesday night.

With the 2024-25 season nearing its halfway point, some fans are urging the team to make a blockbuster trade to boost their standings and pursue another championship run. ESPN senior writer Chris Herring, along with three other insiders, proposed five trade ideas that could “shake up the league and the postseason picture.” One such idea involves sending a package—including a former Rookie of the Year, a Hall of Famer’s son, a three-time Warriors title winner, and a 2026 first-round pick—across to Chicago in exchange for two-time All-Star Zach LaVine.

LaVine has been the subject of trade rumors for years, and after spending three seasons with the Timberwolves, he was traded to the Chicago Bulls in 2017. LaVine had an injury-plagued 2023-24 season but has bounced back strongly this winter, posting career-high shooting percentages and averaging 24.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game. His ability to play off the ball as an elite catch-and-shoot option and cutter makes him an ideal fit for Golden State’s offense under Steve Kerr. LaVine is now considered a more valuable asset than in recent years, and his $95 million contract over the next two seasons is seen as more manageable than before.

In exchange, the Warriors would part ways with key role players, including Andrew Wiggins, Gary Payton II, and Kevon Looney—each of whom contributed to the Warriors’ 2022 championship win. LaVine’s experience in the postseason is limited, but a move to the Warriors could give him an opportunity to return to the playoffs.
