NFL Coaching Search Update
Coaching Shakeups Rock the NFL: Vrabel Heads to Patriots, Cowboys Eye Big Name
Mike Vrabel has landed in New England, while Mike McCarthy is out in Dallas. The coaching shuffle across the league is progressing at a steady pace.
Early moves by the Jets, Saints, and Bears gave them a head start in their searches after mid-season firings. The Jaguars and Raiders recently entered the hunt, with the Cowboys joining on Monday. However, Dallas missed the first opportunity to interview playoff team assistants and must now wait for the next window.
Dallas Cowboys
Reports of discussions between Deion Sanders and owner Jerry Jones have ignited buzz. Despite Sanders’ stated commitment to his role at the University of Colorado, his strong ties to the Cowboys, including a Super Bowl victory, fuel speculation.
Jason Witten, a former Pro Bowl tight end, is also being mentioned despite limited coaching experience at the high school level. Another familiar face, Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, is seen as a logical contender given his past roles with the team.
Dallas is seeking its ninth head coach since Jones bought the franchise in 1989. The roster of previous hires includes big names like Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer, both Super Bowl champions, and seasoned coaches such as Bill Parcells and Wade Phillips.
Las Vegas Raiders
Antonio Pierce and GM Tom Telesco’s departures open the door for new minority owner Tom Brady to play a pivotal role in the franchise’s future direction. Interviews have been scheduled with notable candidates including Pete Carroll, Ben Johnson, Robert Saleh, and Steve Spagnuolo.
Jacksonville Jaguars
Following a disappointing 4-13 season, the Jaguars are exploring coaching changes. Multiple interviews have taken place, with GM Trent Baalke now seeking his fourth head coach since 2021.
Chicago Bears
The Bears are searching for a coach to partner with franchise quarterback Caleb Williams. High-profile interviews have already included Ron Rivera and Pete Carroll, among others.
New Orleans Saints
Interim coach Darren Rizzi is set to interview after leading the team to a 3-5 record post-Dennis Allen’s firing. The Saints continue vetting candidates, including Kliff Kingsbury and David Shaw.
New York Jets
Despite being the first team with a coaching vacancy, the Jets’ hiring process may take the longest. Rex Ryan, who led the team to two AFC Championship appearances, is lobbying for a return. Interviews with various candidates are ongoing, including Jeff Ulbrich, Steve Spagnuolo, and Brian Flores.
