Everton 0-1 Aston Villa: Ollie Watkins’ goal at Goodison Park sparks relegation fears as David Moyes’ comeback fails.
. Aston Villa defeats Everton in David Moyes’ first game back as manager.
. As the Toffees fail to score again, Ollie Watkins scores the game’s lone goal.
The Old Trafford supporters came up with a catchy chant in 2013 when the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson was replaced by the guy known as The Chosen One. The terraces sang out, “Come on, David Moyes, play like Fergie’s boys,” until at least things went south.
The sentiment from the stands was more along the lines of, “Come on David Moyes, do anything but play like Dychey’s boys,” as Moyes made a complete circle and returned to his former home field of Goodison Park over ten years later.
Following a stretch in which they failed to score in eight of his last ten league games, Sean Dyche, the man he replaced, was given the boot. Moyes had an opportunity to win over the supporters early by letting his squad loose because the fans, and eventually the owners, were tired.
However, they performed a lot like some of those poor performances under his predecessor, which was his problem. On the Scotsman’s return, Aston Villa were the party-poopers because Ollie Watkins made the assignment appear a little more challenging than it actually was.
This was by no means a bad game; Everton had two fair penalty calls in the second half, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin wasted a golden opportunity to equalize in stoppage time. Wasteful finishing, however, was the same issue that plagued Dyche’s tenure.
Given how little time he has spent on the training field, Moyes is not to blame for Everton’s shortcomings. However, this excursion will have helped him understand the difficulty of the task at hand, which is to guide the Toffees to their new, fancy stadium as a Premier League team.
