Brian Flores is no longer considered a candidate for the Chicago Bears’ head coaching position.
The Chicago Bears are set to face the Minnesota Vikings on Monday, and as part of their evaluation process for a new head coach, they will be looking closely at Vikings’ defensive coordinator Brian Flores. Flores, who previously served as head coach of the Miami Dolphins, has gained attention due to his success in Minnesota.
However, Flores’ tenure with the Dolphins is a factor the Bears must consider carefully. During his time in Miami, Flores was responsible for the development of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. While Tagovailoa has since thrived under the leadership of current Dolphins’ head coach Mike McDaniel, his early career was marked by uncertainty, much of which Tagovailoa attributed to Flores. In a recent interview, Tagovailoa criticized Flores for his treatment, saying that negative feedback from Flores impacted his confidence and self-belief.
Considering the Bears’ focus on the development of quarterback Caleb Williams, Flores’ past handling of a similar situation with Tagovailoa raises concerns. It suggests that he may not be the right fit for the Bears, particularly if his approach could potentially harm the relationship with their future quarterback.
Additionally, Flores has a pending race discrimination lawsuit against the NFL, stemming from his firing by the Dolphins and his experiences with previous coaching searches. Given the McCaskey family’s approach to ownership, it’s unlikely that they will approve Flores as the next head coach.
