BBC News: West Ham United is considering replacing Julen Lopetegui with Kasper Hjulmand.
West Ham United are reportedly considering 52-year-old Danish manager
Kasper Hjulmand as a possible replacement for Julen Lopetegui.
According to an update by reputed German journalist Florian Plettenberg,
Kasper Hjulmand is the subject of interest from West Ham United.
The Hammers are scouring the market for a long-term replacement for
Julen Lopetegui after a poor start to the 2024/25 season. So, the
Danish tactician has emerged as a target for the East London club.
Who is Kasper Hjulmand?
Kasper Hjulmand has steadily created a reputation for being a dependable
coach throughout his managerial career. A native of Gandrup, the
Dane spent his formative years and professional career in his homeland,
although he hung up his boots as a 26-year-old after a knee injury forced him into an early retirement.
The 52-year-old stepped into the managerial world shortly after calling time on
his professional career. Hjulmand initially managed Lyngby Boldklub’s
under-18 side before taking charge as the first-team boss in 2006. Since then,
he has managed Nordsjaelland, FSV Mainz 05, and the Danish national side.
Hjulmand’s stock soared during his spell with his national team, guiding
Denmark to the UEFA Euro 2020 semi-final while enjoying a winning percentage
of nearly 60. However, the Danish tactician has been a free agent since the
UEFA Euro 2024 ended, and he feels he is ready to embark on a new adventure
after a brief hiatus. His next assignment might come at West Ham United.
London calling?
West Ham United’s interest in Kasper Hjulmand is understandable.
Julen Lopetegui is in a spot of bother after a dreadful start to the 2024/25 season.
While the East London club made heavy investments to bolster the first-team squad,
the Spanish tactician has not delivered the goods thus far this term.
So, West Ham might part ways with the former Real Madrid manager,
with several candidates emerging on the East London club’s wishlist.
Hjulmand is also a viable target, considering his style of play and experience in the managerial world.
With the 52-year-old Danish manager ready to return to the managerial
sphere for the first time in months, a move to the London Stadium might be on the cards.
It will be interesting to see if he becomes the top target for
West Ham if the Hammers part ways with Lopetegui in the coming weeks.
