Dolphins missing two starting offensive linemen preparing for Jets
The Miami Dolphins could be facing the New York Jets on Sunday with a third starter at the right tackle spot for the season.
Kendall Lamm, who replaced Austin Jackson a month ago because of the season-ending knee injury Jackson suffered in Miami’s loss to the Buffalo Bills, missed Wednesday’s practice because of a elbow injury he suffered in last week’s 30-17 loss to the Green Bay Packers.
If Lamm – a 10-year veteran who has started 41 games in his career, and 13 for the Dolphins – isn’t cleared to play it’s possible that Miami would be forced to start rookie Patrick Paul, or Jackson Carman, who was recently elevated up from the practice squad, as his replacement.
Paul primarily works as the backup left tackle, and he generally mans the starting spot during practice each week because Terron Armstead hasn’t participated in a Dolphins practice in three weeks because of the knee injury the five-time Pro Bowler has been nursing.
If Lamm doesn’t participate in practice on Thursday or Friday it’s doubtful that he’ll play against the Jets, and that would leave the Dolphins relatively thin when it comes to backup offensive linemen.
Carman, a former Clemson standout who has bounced around the NFL for four seasons, has been active for the Dolphins for the past three games. He ran out of practice squad elevations so the Dolphins signed the 6-foot-5, 322 pounder to the 53-man roster on Wednesday after placing cornerback Cam Smith on injured reserve because of the shoulder injury he suffered against the Packers.
Because Armstead’s expected to play on Sunday, if Lamm can’t go the coaching staff will decide if Paul, a 2024 second-round pick, or Carman will serve as his replacement, and the Dolphins would likely elevate offensive tackle Ryan Hayes up from the practice squad.
There’s also a small chance Isaiah Wynn could serve as a backup at tackle considering he began his career playing that spot before moving to guard the past two seasons.
