James Tavernier, the captain of the Rangers, maintains that he is far from done at Ibrox, as a new defensive injury presents an opportunity to return to the first team.
Rangers captain James Tavernier has rubbished suggestions he could be
heading for the Ibrox exit door — insisting he still has plenty left to offer the club.
Tavernier has not been a guaranteed starter for Rangers in recent weeks,
with boss Philippe Clement rotating the skipper in and out of the team far more frequently.
With his form being widely criticised by supporters this season,
the veteran full-back had been strongly linked with a move elsewhere.
But Tavernier, who turned 33 only a few weeks ago, insists he still has every
intention of seeing out the remainder of his contract, which still has 18 months left to run.
‘I don’t see the age being a problem,’ he insisted. ‘Three months ago, I think I missed one game.
‘Nothing’s really changed, as in, OK, I’ve gone up one number in my age,
but I still feel fitter than ever to play every single game.
‘I’m used to playing, three games a week, that’s what I really love to do.
It’s what I’ve been used to for so many years.
‘The stats and the numbers I put in are still right up there. So,
it’s just about me continuing to work hard. And when asked to play, then deliver a performance.
‘You obviously want to be playing every single game. That’s just in your nature.
But you’ve got to be professional and really help the team if you’re not.
And when asked to play, you’ve got to obviously make an impact.
‘What I have done over the years, I’ve kept on asking questions,
kept on striving to be better, to keep putting in the numbers, and obviously, I’m still trying to do that.
‘I’m more hungry than ever. Every season that comes.
I’m always hungry to outdo myself. So I’ll always continue to push myself as much as possible.’
Having joined Rangers in 2015,
Tavernier could have the prospect of a testimonial to look forward to next year.
‘I’ve got another season after this, so obviously that’s on the cards and it’s very
unusual these days for players being at clubs for so long,’ said Tavernier. ‘We will just have to wait and see.’
