Report and free match highlights from the Premier League game between Tottenham and
Fulham at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday; Tom Cairney came on and cancelled
out Brennan Johnson’s opener before being sent off following a VAR check; Spurs sit seventh,
Fulham a point back in 10th
Tottenham’s poor play persisted as Fulham held on for a draw when Tom Cairney,
the visiting team’s captain, entered the game, scored a well-earned equalizer to make it 1-1,
then was sent out for a vicious challenge on Dejan Kulusevski.
At 54 minutes, Brennan Johnson scored his 10th goal of the season with a
volley from a counterattack as Fulham was ruining a run of wasted opportunities
and saves from substitute Spurs ‘keeper Fraser Forster.
Sub Cairney, however, scored his first goal away from home in the Premier League in
14 years and his first goal in a year 13 minutes later after Alex Iwobi’s feed.
At that moment, there was controversy because Cairney had replaced Sasa Lukic,
who had been fortunate to avoid receiving a second yellow card for challenging Heung-Min Son.
However, when VAR instructed Cairney to watch the midfielder rake his studs into Kulusevski’s calf,
referee Darren Bond was rightly quick to send him a red card.
Fulham had to play out the last five minutes of regular time and seven minutes of extra time as a result,
but Marco Silva’s team was still able to leave north London with a point despite Spurs’ relentless attack.
