Tottenham appeal Rodrigo Bentancur’s seven-match ban for racist remarks regarding Son Heung-min, with Premier League rivals’shocked’ by the final verdict.
The Football Association penalised Bentancur for stating in an interview that Spurs teammate Son resembled other South Koreans. The Uruguay international apologised for his statements, but he was found to have violated FA Rule E3 by acting inappropriately, using abusive or insulting language, and bringing the game into disrepute. He received a seven-match ban, a £100,000 fine, and was required to complete an educational course.
Spurs accept the guilty decision but are challenging the length of the FA’s penalty, according to The Athletic. The governing body has a minimum six-game penalty for racist insults, but because Bentancur’s case was classified as a “aggravated breach,” he received an additional match. According to the Telegraph, the sentence is unlikely to be reduced to fewer than six games.
If Bentancur’s seven-match ban remains, he will miss league games against Manchester City, Fulham, Bournemouth, Chelsea, Southampton and Liverpool, and a Carabao Cup quarter-final tie with Manchester United on December 19.
