Following a difficult summer, Newcastle United is preparing for the January transfer window.
Marc Guehi is still on the club’s radar following fruitless negotiations with Crystal Palace in the summer. Newcastle will be in a stronger position in talks with Palace as Guehi enters the final 18 months of his contract. The Eagles are also now in the Premier League relegation zone, with only one win in their first 11 games.

Eddie Howe has downplayed expectations for the January transfer window, stating that he would be shocked if it was a ‘busy window’. Paul Mitchell, the club’s sporting director, will be in charge of his first full transfer window after serving as an assistant throughout the summer.

Newcastle’s owners have just pumped a further £35 million into the club by issuing a share, following a £37 million investment made in March. While Guehi remains on The Magpies’ radar, the club is also looking up the field, with right-wing and attacking possibilities being considered.

Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo has had an excellent start to the 2024-25 season. The Cameroon international has also been connected with Newcastle and several Premier League teams, including Liverpool, which are looking for a replacement for Mohammed Salah.

The 25-year-old has eight Premier League goals in 11 games for the Bees this season and is valued at approximately £50 million.

According to the Sun, Newcastle have identified Mbeumo as their ‘number one’ transfer target and are willing to trade Callum Wilson as part of a cash-plus-player deal to complete a January switch. Wilson has not played for Newcastle since May and has only started two games in 2024 due to various fitness difficulties, although he has a solid scoring record in the Premier League when fit.

Wilson, who turns 33 next year, is also out of contract next summer and will be free to join any team unless Newcastle agrees to an extension. The nine-time England international is set to return to Premier League action for the first time in six months, when West Ham United visit St James’ Park on Monday.
