Martin Keown acknowledged that he probably shouldn’t have joined Everton.
After being sold by Aston Villa, the defender joined the Toffees in 1989 and played for the team for more than 100 games.
With negotiations from other clubs, like Manchester United, on the table at the time, Keown, who is now a well-known BBC Sport and talkSPORT pundit after winning the Premier League three times with Arsenal, has acknowledged that, looking back, he thinks as though this may have been the wrong option.
Keown stated in an interview with the Peter Crouch Podcast on November 20: “I went to Everton, but probably shouldn’t have gone there because Aston Villa was offering me, let’s say, really low wages, but they were saying it was the best offer.”
I thought, ‘Well, where’s this coming from?’ and then on the final day, they offered three times as much money. However, we must determine with whom I am playing. You could tell Derby, Forest, Man United, and every other team I was in contact with, which is why I moved to Everton.
Keown’s tenure at Everton was not entirely pointless
Even if Keown is now reflecting on his time at Everton and wondering if it was the best decision for his own career, his four years there were not a disaster because the defender consistently played for the team in the top division.
Even though it’s simple to look back and see what opportunities might have presented themselves had he moved elsewhere, the Toffees were a successful team at the time, and during his first season with the team, they did hold the top spot in the league and had the hope of winning it for a while.
Keown made just 13 league games in his final season before returning to Arsenal, where he went on to have the most success of his career and win three Premier League titles.
