Aston Villa is considering a new £25 million target to take Diego Carlos’ position.
According to reports, Aston Villa’s January transfer intentions include a target for Real Betis
center-back Diego Llorente, with current defender Diego Carlos possibly on the way out.
After a patchy start to the season, Unai Emery is prepared to switch up his defensive scheme,
according to Football Insider. Although the acquisition of Llorente has the potential to be revolutionary,
there are some obstacles to overcome, including as Betis’s hesitancy to give up their defensive mainstay.
Last season, Villa’s defence was a major strength, helping them achieve a plus-10 goal
difference after 11 games and a top-five position in the Premier League. Fast forward to this season,
and the stats tell a different story. With a goal difference now at zero and Villa languishing in ninth place,
it’s evident that their backline needs shoring up.
Llorente, with his pedigree in La Liga, could provide the experience and stability Villa are searching for.
However, Football Insider suggests Betis are unlikely to entertain offers for their star defender,
casting doubt on Villa’s ability to finalise the deal.
Diego Carlos, who joined Aston Villa for £26 million in 2022, is apparently being considered
for sale in an effort to make room for Llorente. Carlos’ tenure at Villa Park has been marred
by injuries and inconsistent play; last season, the Brazilian started just 20 Premier League games.
Despite making 11 appearances this season, he is still ranked lower in Emery’s hierarchy than Pau Torres and Ezri Konsa.
Villa’s defensive options are further strengthened by Tyrone Mings’ injured comeback,
which gives Emery the assurance he needs to approve Carlos’ exit.
Emery’s goal of a more dependable defensive core is in line with this choice.
