Rangers to attempt January loan signing amid transfer ‘long shot’

Andy Newport feels Rangers will face a “long shot” in making permanent moves in January and will instead have to rely on the loan market for reinforcements. The Gers sit third in the Scottish Premiership, nine points behind Celtic and Aberdeen.

According to journalist Newport in the Daily Record (17 November), Rangers’ poor financial situation means Philippe Clement will have to rely on the loan market, with another attacker the priority if business can be done. “That remains a long shot [Rangers strengthening in January],” the author stated.

“Clement was warned he’d have to sell before he could buy in the summer, and the club’s latest annual results demonstrated why, with the club losing millions yet again.

“The Ibrox manager could do with some new faces to improve his side, particularly up front. Rangers continue to rely on Cyriel Dessers’ goals, but the Nigerian isn’t particularly clinical when it comes to taking his chances.

“Brazilian frontman Danilo has returned to fitness, but it’s unclear how long he’ll be able to play considering his injury history. With Hamza Igamane yet to justify his £2 million price tag, Clement may have to consider bringing in another option. “It looks like his best chance of that is through the loan market, which isn’t exactly brimming with nailed-on goalscorers” .

Philippe Clement needs a regular goal scorer at Rangers

Clement’s primary aim in the summer transfer window should have been to sign a consistent striker to lead his offensive lineup. Dessers may be the Gers’ top striker at the moment, but the quantity of squandered opportunities demonstrates why he cannot be their first-choice number nine.

Lawrence Shankland was heavily connected with a move to Ibrox in the summer, but he has struggled for form this season, and given that he is out of contract at the end of the season, it seems unlikely that they will pay a fee for the Scotland forward.

Hamza Igamane was undoubtedly brought in, but based on the few games the Morocco international has played for the Ibrox club, he is far from ready to challenge Dessers for the starting spot.

Only time will tell what happens in the January transfer window, but if Rangers want to mount a late title fight, signing a new striker is the best way to do so. In other Rangers news, Vaclav Cerny has been praised by Czech media following his performance against Albania.
