Wolves summer transfer target told to make huge decision on Liverpool future by Newcastle United hero

Premier League cult hero Shay Given has told Wolves summer transfer target Caoimhin Kelleher to quit Liverpool.

Express Sport claimed in July that Wolves and Celtic were interested in Kelleher, but would want a sum of approximately £20 million to lure him away from Anfield. According to The Athletic, Nottingham Forest then made a player-plus-cash offer, which was rejected, and all three clubs recruited substitute players.

Wolves signed Sam Johnstone from Crystal Palace, Kasper Schmeichel moved to Celtic Park, and Carlos Miguel joined Forest from Corinthians. Kelleher remained on Merseyside, although he is still below the pecking order under Allison, and he just recently received a playing opportunity as a result of the Brazilian’s injury.

Liverpool have signed Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who will join in 2025, calling the Irishman’s future into question. His countryman Shay Given, who has played for Aston Villa, Manchester City, and Newcastle United in the Premier League, feels Kelleher should end his career at Liverpool and go on.

Given told the Mirror that Caoimhin played 26 games last season and demonstrated the ability to be a Premier League No. 1. But he turns 26 later this month, and if I’m being brutally honest, he needs to leave Liverpool if he wants that to happen.

“Every professional footballer must have the hope that if they win a spot on the team and perform well, they will keep their jersey. Caoimhin doesn’t have that. It has been made clear to him that he will always support Alisson, and let’s be honest, he is up against one of the best players in the world.

Caoimhin turns 26 later this month. He’s finished his tenure at Liverpool. That is no disrespect to a fantastic club, but they are beginning to see that they cannot keep Kelleher back for much longer because he is a quality player.

“You only get one career, one life, and one chance to make the most of what you have. Ten years from now, he may be 36, and people will be referring to him as being over his prime.”

Given the possibilities available to Gary O’Neil, a move from Wolves for Kelleher is highly unlikely. Johnstone joined from Crystal Palace for a fee of £10 million.

Jose Sa, who was signed for an estimated €8 million in 2021, has been first choice in recent weeks in Johnstone’s absence. Dan Bentley, meanwhile, signed a three-year contract in September that will keep him with the club until 2027. Tom King, Wales’ third choice goalkeeper, is also under contract until 2027, having signed a three-year agreement in February.
