Newcastle United Set To Offer Jose Mourinho Managerial Role
If Eddie Howe departs St James’ Park, José Mourinho is interested in taking over as Newcastle manager.
The Fenerbahce head coach has unfinished business in the Premier League and sees Newcastle as his greatest option for another job in England,
having previously managed Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham.
Howe has no intention of leaving Newcastle anytime soon.
On his third anniversary, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue his work.
I’m really delighted with how things are going, so happy to be in this position and still dreaming.
I’m pleased with the development, but you always want more, and we haven’t gotten the one thing we wanted when we came in: a trophy.
That was the dream, and it is still what drives us. We believe we can achieve remarkable things, and it is what drives us every day.
Qualifying for Europe again is one of our goals this season.”
Howe is not under immediate pressure and has been boosted by back-to-back victories over Chelsea and Arsenal after a difficult start to the season.
However, he is not guaranteed long-term job security due to Newcastle’s Saudi owners’ ambitions to enter the Champions League.
The 46-year-old lost two major allies when directors Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi resigned last summer.
There has also been tension with the sporting director, Paul Mitchell, who was recruited in July.
Newcastle had gone five Premier League games without a win before they defeated Arsenal last Saturday.
Their 11th-place finish falls short of the owners’ expectations. Newcastle United are expected to compete in European qualifying.
Despite financial worries, some young players were sold in June to meet profitability and sustainability criteria.
Mourinho’s outburst last weekend was prompted by officiating errors
that resulted in Fenerbahce giving up two penalties and losing a strong penalty appeal.
He also criticised Turkish football in general.
The Turkish football federation punished him with a one-game ban and a fine.
“Nobody abroad wants to watch the Turkish league,” he said. “Who wants to watch this Turkish league abroad?
They have the Premier League, they have the French league, they have the German league,
they have the Portuguese league, they have the Dutch league. Why should they see this? …
It’s too grey, it’s too dark, smells bad. But that’s my job, and I will give everything to my job, to my club.”
