Aston Villa’s Unai Emery makes a rare error amid a “strange” development.
Unai Emery naming a weakened Aston Villa side to face Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup was a “strange” decision, according to Don Goodman.
The Villans made 10 changes for Wednesday’s (30 October) last-16 tie at Villa Park and paid the price in a 2-1 loss.
Emery has made clear his next aim at Villa is to win a trophy, but he now has one less chance to do so this campaign after being eliminated from a winnable tie.
Speaking to Villa News, Goodman said: “He would have backed the team he selected to win the game.
They’ve got such a good squad, with the likes of Jhon Duran, John McGinn and Ian Maatsen –
who was playing in a Champions League final recently – all starting.
“However, Villa turned to younger players from the bench, which clearly tells you the priority was not the Carabao Cup.
“It’s strange on the face of it because a full-strength Villa at Villa Park – with no disrespect to Crystal Palace – you’d always fancy them.
You can’t really take aim at Unai Emery, but it’s a lost chance. I wouldn’t be too critical because the majority of his decisions at Villa have been excellent.
Aston Villa waste brilliant opportunity to land silverware
As Goodman says, you cannot be too critical of Emery because everything he’s touched so far as Villa manager has turned to gold.
The line-up named to face Palace was still strong enough to come out on top, but that was not the case on a rare disappointing night.
Emery instead opted to rest some big names, and he cannot be blamed for that as this is a gruelling campaign in terms of fixtures coming thick and fast.
The Carabao Cup is now off the list for this season, but Villa fans still have plenty to be excited about in the Premier League and Champions League, while the FA Cup offers another shot at silverware.
