Disheartening: £4m ex-Ibrox striker sacked as club who voted Rangers down enter administration

There will be scant sympathy amongst Rangers supporters as Inverness Caledonian Thistle enter administration with the club’s future hanging in the balance.

The Highland side have been deducted 15 points by the SPFL as financial issues envelop the club despite a public appeal for investment earlier in the season.

Caley Thistle were one of ten SPL clubs who endorsed banishing Rangers from the Scottish Premiership in the wake of the Ibrox club’s financial troubles in 2012.

Now, one former Rangers striker has also been relieved of his duties at the Tulloch Stadium with Inverness rooked to the bottom of Scottish League One after a points deduction.

Ex-Rangers striker sacked by Inverness

Ex-Rangers striker Duncan Ferguson had only just returned to Scotland with Inverness after a substantial working hiatus from the country.

Not since leaving Rangers in 1994 has Big Dunc worked north of the border, with the Everton legend taking the ICT job in September last year.

More famous for his talents on the park, with Rangers paying Dundee United £4m to sign Ferguson in 1993, Caley Thistle was only the controversial striker’s second foray into full-time management.

But the ex-Forest Green Rovers forward, who served a three-month jail term for a headbutt on Raith Rovers’ John McStay whilst at Rangers in 1994, is now looking for his third managerial gig.

That’s because Ferguson has officially been sacked by Inverness as they desperately scramble to cut costs in the wake of administration.

Alongside Duncan Ferguson, two other coaches in Gary Bollan and Stuart Garden have been let go with Inverness Caledonian Thistle facing a desperate situation to salvage their future.

Duncan Ferguson ‘did all he could’ for SPFL strugglers

Duncan Ferguson, who had been working for free, has also been reacting to the news of his sacking at Inverness.

The former Premier League hitman had amassed 12 points in 10 games this season against the backdrop of uncertainty at the club, with Inverness since being deducted 15 points for entering administration.

The Highland club now face a huge task to avoid relegation to League Two this season, with ICT set to start next season on -5 points no matter what division they end up in.

Ferguson has claimed he did ‘all he could’ to steady the ship.

“I’ve done the very best I can for my club and for my players,” Ferguson told BBC Sport.

“I’ve always tried to support my players behind the scenes and they all know that. And that’s the most important thing for me.”

With Inverness putting on record their thanks to Duncan Ferguson, the club also announced that Scott Kellacher would be taking over as first-team coach with ‘immediate effect’.

Administrators will now try to find a new buyer for the club and, should that fail, they may well strip the club of their assets to pay creditors.
