Celtic face a crucial Champions League test this Wednesday as they travel to Bergamo to take on an in-form Atalanta BC. After suffering a heavy defeat in Dortmund in their last UCL fixture, the Scottish champions are eager to get their European campaign back on track.

Celtic have had a mixed start to their season. Despite a strong domestic showing with 10 wins from 12 matches, they have failed on the European stage.

Brendan Rodgers’ men have struggled in away games in Europe, losing eight of their last nine fixtures in the competition.

Meanwhile, Atalanta come into this match on the back of three consecutive victories, including an impressive 3-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk.

With four points already in the bag, they will be eager to tighten their grip on a top-eight spot in the league-phase table.

The Sporting News looks at the key details ahead of this game, including how to watch the match, kickoff times and the latest lineup news.

Atalanta vs. Celtic predicted lineups, team news

Atalanta have a long list of injuries heading to this fixture. Rafael Toloi, Marco Brescianini, Gianluca Scamacca, and Giorgio Scalvini are sidelined due to injuries.

However, they welcome back Matteo Ruggeri and Berat Djimsiti who have recovered from injuries. Sead Kolasinac will also be available for selection this week after being laid low by illness.

Atalanta predicted XI (3-4-2-1, right to left): Carnesecchi (GK) — Djimsiti, Hien, Kolasinac — Zappacosta, Ederson, De Roon, Ruggeri — Samardzic, Lookman — Retegui.

Injured: Toloi, Brescianini, Kossounou, Scamacca, Scalvini
Suspended: None

Daizen Maeda has found the back of the net in both of Celtic’s Champions League games so far this season and now has the opportunity to become the first player from the club to score in three consecutive matches in the competition. He is expected to line up alongside forwards Kyogo Furuhashi and Nicolas Kuhn at the Gewiss Stadium.

Left-back Greg Taylor is sidelined with a hamstring injury, while key defender Cameron Carter-Vickers remains out of action since picking up a foot injury on the first matchday. In their absence, Alex Valle and Auston Trusty are likely to continue filling in.

The rest of Celtic’s defense will be made up of Liam Scales, who recently scored his first goal for the Republic of Ireland shortly after finding the net against Slovan Bratislava, and Alistair Johnston. They’ll play in front of veteran goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.

Celtic predicted XI (4-3-3, right to left): Schmeichel (GK) — Johnston, Trusty, Scales, Valle — Engels, McGregor, Hatate — Kuhn, Furuhashi, Maeda.

Injured: Taylor, Carter-Vickers,
Suspended: None

Atalanta vs. Celtic Prediction

After being caught out by trying to go head-to-head with Dortmund, it’s likely that Celtic will adopt a more cautious, defensive strategy against an Atalanta side currently in excellent form.

However, despite any tactical adjustments, Celtic’s defensive vulnerabilities are likely to be exploited by a home team that has found its stride following a summer of uncertainty and disruption.

  • Prediction: Atalanta 3-1 Celtic
