Following an injury-marred start to the 2024 NFL season, the Kansas City Chiefs are giving Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes a new alternative at wide receiver. And the player in question was already part of the team in the last two seasons, which ended with Super Bowl wins.

The 2024 NFL season has presented obstacles for Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes, despite the Kansas City Chiefs’ 6-0 record. In recent weeks, several major players have sustained injuries.

The team’s wide receiver, JuJu Smith-Schuster, recently suffered a hamstring injury, causing another setback. Reid revealed on Monday that Mahomes will lose two key teammates to the Raiders in Week 8.

This simply adds to the Chiefs’ wide receiver issue, which already includes Marquise “Hollywood” Brown and Rashee Rice. The issue necessitated a response from the front office, prompting the team to make a basic but important adjustment to the position.

On Tuesday, the Chiefs announced they signed wide receiver Cornell Powell to the Practice Squad. The fourth-year wideout may not be the kind of addition that sends fans into a frenzy, but it’s one that makes sense.

Chiefs make logical move as Reid, Mahomes need options at WR

Reid prioritises players who understand the system, regardless of their reputation within the NFL. Powell has worked with Mahomes on the Chiefs for the past three seasons, despite lacking active roster experience.

The Clemson product, who was selected 181st overall in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, was in Kansas City when the team won Super Bowls LVII and LVIII. Powell was waived as part of the roster cuts in August, but injuries at WR led him another opportunity.
