Martin O’Neill tells Rangers to ‘eke out results’ to stay in pursuit of Celtic
According to former Celtic manager Martin O’Neill, under-fire Rangers manager Philippe Clement just needs to find a way to win while being competitive with Celtic.
The Ibrox club is in turmoil following a 1-0 defeat at Kilmarnock on Sunday, leaving the Light Blues six points behind Brendan Rodgers’ side and Aberdeen at the top of the William Hill Premiership, with no permanent chairman, chief executive, or director of football in place.
O’Neill, who competed with Rangers from 2000 to 2005 when both clubs were more closely matched, winning three titles, three Scottish Cups, and a League Cup while reaching the UEFA Cup final in 2003, weighed in on the current Old Firm rivalry on talkSPORT, calling Rangers as “really poor.” He encouraged Rangers’ Belgian manager, who is just over a year in the job, to do everything it takes to win games.
He stated, “You have to eke out outcomes, and until you truly understand some definite pattern about your team, about how they’re going to play, just hang in there and go win the game. “And no matter how ugly it is, go and win; you had the chance there, Celtic had dropped a few points.
“That’s the team you need to be concerned about; go get the outcome. Whatever the outcome, simply go for it. “And it didn’t happen in Kilmarnock. And I watched a good portion of the game as well. And they didn’t appear to be scoring a goal. And that was the whole point, and that’s how you feel about this side.
“They need to go and win. They need around three consecutive victories to give themselves some optimism and confidence.”
