Dan Burn has triggered new contract at Newcastle United
Is not set to become a free agent this summer, having triggered a clause in his contract that will extend his stay at St
James’ Park. When Burn joined Newcastle in January 2022, he signed a two-and-a-half-year contract that would
expire at the end of the current season. That was extended in October, but the terms of the deal announced a year
ago would have left the defender as a free agent this summer unless he agreed to a whole new contract.
However, senior Newcastle sources have confirmed that Burn’s contract included a clause that would automatically
renew it if specific conditions were met. That clause has already been triggered, therefore the 32-year-old’s status
beyond the end of the season is no longer uncertain. Burn’s other centre-backs, Fabian Schar, Emil Krafth, and
Jamaal Lascelles, are all set to see their present contracts expire at the end of the season.
Burn will face his previous club tomorrow, with Brighton visiting St James’ Park, and Howe has been impressed by
the defender’s influence since returning to his native North East. “I’d say that Dan has surpassed expectations, and
that’s no slight on him when he came in,” Howe said. “It’s a complete tribute to how well he has performed. I think
he has been fantastic for us. “I knew Dan was a terrific player after managing against him for Brighton and other
clubs, but I didn’t realize how good he was until I managed him and saw his effectiveness.
“The added bonus with Dan was always the Geordie perspective; his love for Newcastle simply offered an extra layer
that we wouldn’t have had from any other player signing in that position.
“He’s managed to keep his spot in the team and develop into a great leader for us, as well as a strong personality on
and off the pitch – I can’t praise him enough for how he conducts himself. “I believe he’s been an excellent signing for
us.”
