The race is on between Aston Villa and Newcastle United to sign a newly-made England international.

A host of Premier League clubs are reportedly interested in signing Lille midfielder Angel Gomes following an impressive rise in Ligue 1.

The 24-year-old left Manchester United on a free transfer in 2020 as he wasn’t afforded enough first-team opportunities. The Red Devils will now be ruing not handing Gomes more minutes as the midfielder has become a top player since.

Lee Carsley’s spell as interim England manager has helped Gomes earn his first two appearances at senior level for the Three Lions. The midfielder has certainly taken his chance to shine, impressing alongside the likes of Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham and Cole Palmer.

GiveMeSport reports Villa and Newcastle were among clubs to conduct visits for Gomes during the international break. The Premier League pair sent scouts to watch how he fared in the 3-1 win over Finland last Sunday – and it was a worthwhile trip as Gomes assisted Jack Grealish’s opening goal.

Representatives from Tottenham Hotspur and Man Utd are also said to have been in attendance in Helsinki. Spurs are keen to bolster their midfield ranks with energy and flair, while United are hoping they can rectify their past mistakes and offer a route back to Old Trafford.

A regular starter for Lille in Ligue 1, the Europa Conference League and Champions League ever since 2021, Gomes has become a key player for the French outfit. The Man Utd academy graduate has racked up 123 appearances to date, contributing nine goals and 19 assists.

Capable of playing in several central midfield roles, just behind the striker, or on either flank, Gomes boasts excellent versatility – something any of his potential suitors would like to tap into. It just awaits to be seen if the player, estimated to have a transfer value of £23.2 million, is willing to sacrifice his time at Lille for a move back to England.
