The Rangers defender impressed against Cristiano Ronaldo.
I was in situ for Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Glasgow at Hampden Park –
but in a Rangers defender he found an immovable object.
The Portuguese icon has seen and done it all in the game.
He’s even managed to tick the water flume at Cameron House off his lengthy bucket list,
but managing to get the better of John Souttar is now something that is likely to pass him by.
After a night of mishits and strops, CR7 left the park whinging and moaning about who knows what,
throwing his arms up in the air, a sign of how well Souttar and Grant Hanley alongside him had done against the forward.
A 0-0 draw for Scotland against provided only a point in Nations League group A1 but the performance was something to shout.
What Souttar showed from what I watched was that he is more than capable of being Scotland’s number one
defender in the middle of a back four or five. And at club level,
Philippe Clement was shown that he has a player capable of dealing with the rigours of facing
elite opposition with tough Europa League assignments ahead.
The stats back it up too. He made nine clearances and won an outstanding 100% of his duels in the air and on the ground,
with an 84% pass accuracy and 60% accurate long ball rate. It shows that not only did he win the defensive battle,
he was able to move the ball on too.
Souttar told BBC Sportsound after the game: “It’s our first point of the campaign and I think we deserved it.
Over the course of the campaign we’ve been pretty unlucky not to pick up a point, so it’s pleasing.
“I think it’s always good to keep a clean sheet as a defender.
It’s a credit to the whole team and Craig Gordon in goal who pulled off a great save near the end.
The boys are always striving for more. We had chances. When we look back on the game, we will be pleased.”
