Breaking News: Knicks’ Landry Shamet Leaves Games With Shoulder Injury

Landy Shamet departed the New York Knicks‘ preseason game against the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday due to an apparent shoulder injury.

On Tuesday night, the New York Knicks experienced the ugly side of preseason.

Landry Shamet, who was expected to be on the Knicks’ bench this season, exited a sub-par evening after suffering an apparent shoulder injury in the team’s penultimate preseason game against the Charlotte Hornets. Shamet’s right arm seemed to be at an unusual angle as he attempted to block a Moussa Diabate drive, and he collapsed to the ground in pain, clutching his right shoulder.

The projected starters (OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges, Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, Karl-Anthony Towns) were all rested on Tuesday, giving the Knicks’ reserves a chance to shine. Shamet was in the improvised starting five and had eight points and two rebounds before leaving.

Though he does not have a guaranteed deal, Shamet appeared to be on his way to joining the Knicks’ future rotation. Shamet, who previously played with Bridges and Cameron Payne in Phoenix, played 67 minutes in the Knicks’ first three preseason games, including 16 points against the Hornets on October 6.

“I don’t make the ultimate decision on [the last roster positions], but I base it on [Shamet’s] performance on the court. “He’s done really well,” Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau remarked earlier this month, according to Stefan Bondy of the New York Post. “He has a great chemistry with Cam [Payne], and when Deuce [McBride] joins them, they move quickly. You can play fast.”

Shamet, 27, is beginning his eighth season in the NBA after being selected in the first round by Philadelphia in 2018. In addition to Phoenix, Shamet has represented Los Angeles, Brooklyn, and Washington.

The Knicks led Charlotte 92-89 after three quarters.
