“Bid Accepted”: Ajax Manager hints decision has been made on ‘exceptional player’ Jordan Henderson amid shock links to Rangers.

We’re not even into January yet and already it’s silly season when it comes to Rangers and the transfer window.

Whilst the Ibrox club’s stock is not as high as it once was in global football, there’s been no shortage of ambitious transfer links surrounding the Gers in recent seasons.

But as Rangers move towards a more youthful player trading-focused transfer model, the latest high-profile link surrounding the club is a story as old as time itself.

‘Exceptional’ Jordan Henderson crucial to Ajax plans

Jordan Henderson probably didn’t think he’d spend the twilight of his career being linked to Rangers, but for those of us used to this sort of thing by now, it’ll come as no surprise.

After Rangers News had profiled Jordan Henderson as a potential solution to the club’s issues in midfield, suddenly the Ajax midfielder was being properly linked to Ibrox.

Rangers are short and are known to be in the hunt for an experienced number six who can bring some law and order to the middle of the pitch, particularly in the big matches.

Henderson, who is now 34-years-old, increasingly finds himself on the bench for Ajax despite holding the captain’s armband in the Netherlands.

Naturally, it’s led to plenty of speculation over the legendary former Liverpool captain’s future.

Speculation which generated the usual ‘bookmakers’ favourite’ reports surrounding Rangers but from what we can see, there are no substantiated links to Ibrox.

There has also been plenty of chatter about a potential Jordan Henderson return to Sunderland, with TalkSPORT claiming Premier League and Championship clubs have their eye on the midfielder.

Ajax’s manager, the once Rangers-linked Francesco Farioli, was asked about the midfielder by Gianluca di Marzio this week and was pretty clear the Englishman remains a key player at the Amsterdam club.

“He is an exceptional player, with great quality and leadership,” said Farioli.

“He won the Champions League as captain, so I think he can tell what it means to have a winning mentality and a hard-working attitude.

“There are many beautiful things that make a fundamental contribution to a young team like ours.”

Could England legend become latest Ibrox veteran?

Farioli didn’t really give much away when it comes to Jordan Henderson’s Ajax future.

But don’t be surprised to see the 34-year-old angle for a move should he find himself permanently consigned to the Eredivisie outfit’s bench.

Having spent 12 years at Liverpool, Henderson moved to Saudi Arabia to play under Steven Gerrard for six months before returning to Europe with Ajax in January.

Contracted in Holland until 2026, who knows what’s next for Henderson but we’re almost certain it won’t be a move to Rangers.

Not only are Henderson’s exorbitant wages a sticking point, but we’re not sure the necessary investment in the midfielder would be justified for the potential returns.

You can file the links to Jordan Henderson under the same category as those extensive reports surrounding Jack Wilshere during the tenure of Steven Gerrard.

But for every example like the ex-Arsenal and England midfielder, there is one which has actually come to fruition in Glasgow.

Jermain Defoe joined the Gers in the twilight of his career and left an impressive legacy for the right reasons.

Aaron Ramsey, joining on loan from Juventus, unfortunately did the opposite.
