Why Kasper Schmeichel snubbed 3 other teams to join Celtic this summer

Kasper Schmeichel reportedly had the opportunity to sign for three other clubs during the summer transfer window – but opted for Celtic.

He’s explained why.

Schmeichel has played every game since joining the Glasgow giants. And it’s mostly been a positive experience for the 37-year-old former English Premier League title-winner.

He’s got to taste UEFA Champions League football again while competing for silverware at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet spoke to the Hoops goalkeeper, who penned a one-year deal in July after leaving Anderlecht.

The veteran shot-stopper is believed to have had the chance to join Nottingham Forest, Ipswich Town and Wolverhampton Wanderers when he became a free agent. Yet, the lure of Celtic Park was too much for him to turn down.

“Playing for the title, as I am now doing at Celtic, and at the same time being at the highest level in the Champions League, motivates me,” Schmeichel said while on international duty with Denmark.

“When I look back on my career, the moments I have enjoyed the most have been the few matches I have had in the Champions League.

“Of course, the Premier League has a very special place in my heart, but for me, it was an easy choice to go to Celtic, where I have come to a club that plays in the Champions League, must win every game and have 60,000 fans at the home games. Those are exactly the challenges that really motivate me.

“When it comes to football, money has never been a motivation for me.”
