Chris Rigg, a talented midfield player, may become more difficult to keep at Sunderland during the January transfer window.

After being a member of the first team squad for the previous two seasons, Rigg made his Sunderland debut in January 2023 at the age of 15. This season, he has established himself as a regular.

The 17-year-old has started eight of the first nine league games of the current campaign, and the Black Cats’ ascent to the top of the Championship table is largely due to his efforts.

However, Rigg’s impressive form could see him attract attention from elsewhere, and according to talkSPORT, Premier League giants Manchester United could make a move for the midfielder in January as they look to fend off interest from other clubs, including Sunderland’s North East rivals Newcastle United.

Journalist Alan Nixon claims that ambitious League One side Birmingham City could offer close to £10 million for Rigg, while Everton are another club said to be keen on the England Under-18 international.

Sunderland fan pundit on Chris Rigg future

FLW’s Sunderland fan analyst Jack Austwicke estimated that Rigg’s worth is between £30 and £40 million when asked what the club should ask for, although he questioned whether that amount is reasonable for a player with little senior experience.

“I haven’t really had the chance to wax lyrical about Chris Rigg on here yet, and I genuinely cannot put into words how good this kid is,” Jack said.

“I’ve said this about a number of players at Sunderland over the years, but this guy is going to the very top, I think he’ll go higher than the likes of Jobe Bellingham and Jack Clarke.

“If I’m being completely honest, I think he has the highest ceiling, and if not, I can envision a trajectory that is comparable to Jude Bellingham’s.

“You could argue that it’s too soon for us to profit, but what price do you place on a 17-year-old who hasn’t ever played football at all?

Can we immediately offer him a fee of between £30 and £40 million?

“That’s the amount we would receive for him if we waited a year or two, so that’s what Sunderland would realistically pay for him.

“It’s a difficult one because he’s so inexperienced, but if you can put that on him right now, do so.
