Drake Signs $100M Deal With Apple Music, Becomes The face of New Streaming Service
Aubrey “Drake” Graham had his 208th hit record on the US Billboard Hot 100 charts back in March. Following
several earlier successful releases by the rapper, including his first hit song Best I Ever Had in 2009, Hotline Bling
in 2015, and a feature on Rihanna’s 2016 hit song Work, Oprah’s Bank Account starring Lil Yachty and DaBaby
arrived quickly. When “Pain 1993,” featuring Playboi Carti, became Drake’s 38th top-10 US song in May, he tied
Queen of Pop Madonna. Drake is so successful that a single mattress at his modestly named The Embassy, a
50,000-square-foot, $100 million Toronto house, costs $400,000 (which also includes the cost of having someone
come in and change the mattress).
It’s one thing for a non-US artist to have achieved such success in hip-hop, but Drake goes much beyond the genre.
With over 28 billion streams, he was the most-streamed artist on Spotify over the last ten years. In addition to three
mixtapes, all five of his albums have peaked at number one on the US Billboard charts and have topped charts
worldwide. With 8.2 billion Spotify streams, he became the largest musician of 2018 and the first artist on Apple
Music to reach the 10-billion-stream milestone. Drake is almost certain to break more records in 2020 with his
upcoming album scheduled for release this summer and his recently released mixtape, Dark Lane Demo Tapes.
