Former Stoke City loan defender Axel Tuanzebe needed emergency surgery to save his thumb after sustaining an injury while washing the dishes.

The 26-year-old centre-back had hoped a catalogue of injury problems that had dogged his career with Manchester United, Aston Villa and Stoke were behind him as he found his feet and gradually regular playing time at Ipswich. He helped win promotion to the Premier League last season and had started every match so far this term before the weekend.

Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna explained after a defeat at West Ham that Tuanzebe was unavailable due to a “very unfortunate accident” which had resulted in a hand injury. The Daily Mail now reports that the defender injured himself while doing the washing up at home.

A glass that Tuenzebe was cleaning smashed in his hands and one of the shards lacerated his skin. He required urgent medical attention but thankfully the surgery was successful. Tuanzebe is not expected to be back in time for Ipswich when they go in search of their first win of the campaign against Everton on October 19.

McKenna said on Saturday: “He’s had surgery and will be out for a while. It’s not going to be a couple of weeks, probably longer. There are still discussions with the specialists.
