Michael Stewart hammered Cyriel Dessers and Sven Sprangler as Rangers squandered a good chance at St Johnstone on Sunday (6 October). The Nigerian international soared highest in St Johnstone’s penalty area to meet James Tavernier’s corner kick, but his header flew over the crossbar.

Dessers is frequently chastised for his high amount of missed chances while wearing the Light Blue jersey, and with Sprangler providing him with every opportunity to score, the wasteful striker has been singled out once more.

Stewart stated live on Premier Sports on Sunday (6 October, 8:09pm): “That’s a free header.” You can see him getting loose. [Sven] Sprangler is on him, and he loses him.

“Dessers’ defense is horrible, and he needs to improve. That’s a guilt-edge opportunity. St Johnstone’s defence is awful. “Sprangler was all over the place – he lost the Rangers striker, and the free header was off target. “Very poor.” Vaclav Cerny scored in the 34th minute to give Rangers a 1-0 half-time lead.

Despite scoring 22 goals in his debut season at Ibrox, Dessers did not receive the warm reception that many at the club had hoped for. Despite numerous transfer offers over the summer, he chose to fight for his position.

The 29-year-old has started the 2024/25 season well, with seven goals and two assists in all competitions, but there is still a sense around Ibrox that he is missing far too many opportunities.

His effort over the crossbar after eight minutes against the Saints is an excellent example, albeit he is sure to recover and score. Many elite strikers do.

No matter how many goals Dessers scores in a season, it appears he will never escape criticism after a slew of strikers have been linked with a move to Ibrox in recent summers.

For the time being, Clement remains confident in his first-choice centre-forward, and his faith has been rewarded, even if he does miss the odd opportunity. In other Rangers news, Kris Boyd made a Celtic jibe live on Sky Sports following the Gers’ recent performance.
