The referee who was criticized by Steve Cooper for “two poor decisions” in Leicester City’s 4-2 loss to Arsenal,

including a potential red card for Gunners defender Riccardo Calafiori, will not officiate at a Premier League match

this weekend. Sam Barrott will also be absent from a Premier League fixture for the first time this season.

Referee Sam Barrott
Cambridge United v Ipswich Town, EFL Sky Bet League One, Football, Abbey Stadium, Cambridge, UK – 04 Feb 2023

The first was a reported foul on Jamie Vardy by William Saliba in the build-up to Arsenal’s opening goal, which was

waived off by Barrott, who then booked Vardy and Cooper for protesting. With the score 2-2 in the second half,

already-booked Riccardo Calafiori tripped Facundo Buonanotte as he dribbled by him, but Barrott declined to show a

red card, instead cautioning the City player for brandishing an imaginary card. Because of the spell we’re in – and the

spell that I’m in personally – I’m trying to not let referees’ decisions be the headline, as I’m trying to take responsibility

for a team that needs to get better results. But we feel those were two poor decisions.”
