The disappointment that West Ham United isn’t able to recruit Jhon Duran from Aston Villa grows with each passing week.

There is no doubt in my mind that Jhon Duran’s blazing pace and finishing skills would have elevated West Ham to a whole new level.
After failing in his attempts to sign the 20-year-old striker from Aston Villa, Julen Lopetegui was forced to settle for Niclas Fullkrug at the London Stadium.

After Duran made the “crossed hammers” gesture during a live stream, it briefly appeared as though Duran’s signing with the Hammers was just a formality.

But ultimately, we were unable to satisfy Villa’s demands—which are reportedly in the neighborhood of £40 million—for the Colombian international.

West Ham has incurred significant costs in the summer that we were flirting very close to the edge regrading new PSR guidelines.

Nevertheless, I think it was all the Hammers’ responsibility that they were unable to pay Duran’s requested fee.

If the club’s authorities had considered other options, things may have turned out quite differently.

If J-Lo had signed an ex-Hammer, Jhon Duran might be at West Ham right now.

Although Lopetegui brought in a number of excellent players during the summer, I think he made one very costly mistake.

In the summer, Lopetegui paid almost £25 million to bring Luis Guilherme from Palmeiras to the London Stadium.

He was actually our very first summer signing. He hasn’t, however, yet participated in a single competitive minute for the senior team.

I see now that the Hammers took a calculated gamble by signing the 18-year-old.

Although Guilherme might improve in a few years, he is of little use to us at this time, which is why Lopetegui ought to have taken a different decision in the summer.

Instead, Felipe Anderson should have been signed by West Ham on a free transfer, in my opinion.

Ironically, the 31-year-old transferred to Palmeiras and has already scored two goals and provided an assist for his new team.

If Lopetegui had signed the former Hammer, who was a free agent, rather than Guilherme, the team would have had the money to bring Duran to the London Stadium.

It truly annoys me that West Ham didn’t take that action as it would have been so easy.

While I don’t claim Anderson would have started each week, he would have offered very solid cover and competition for our wingers.
