The Premier League has released a statement clarifying Newcastle United’s penalty against Manchester City.

Referee Jarred Gillett gave Newcastle a penalty after Anthony Gordon was brought down inside the area by Manchester City goalkeeper

Ederson. Gordon went up and converted to make it 1-1 after Josko Gvardiol’s first-half goal.

And that’s how the game finished, as Newcastle recovered from their defeat against Fulham to put up a strong effort against the Premier

League champions.

The Premier League Match Centre explained the decision to award Newcastle a penalty in the 55th minute of the game.

The Premier League Match Centre stated, “The referee awarded a penalty for a foul by Ederson on Gordon and issued a yellow card to

Ederson, deeming that his actions were a genuine attempt to play the ball but denied an obvious goal-scoring opportunity.” The VAR

checked and validated the referee’s call, as well as Ederson’s yellow card.”

Newcastle great Alan Shearer took to X to admit that he did not believe it should have been a penalty, but VAR would not reverse Gillett’s

on-field ruling.

Gordon won his sixth Premier League penalty for Newcastle since the start of last season. In the absence of Alexander Isak, the 23-year-

old was playing out of position as a central striker.

When asked about the penalty decision after the game, Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola replied, “I didn’t see it. I’m not sure if

Ederson touched Anthony Gordon, but a penalty is what it is.
