Trey Ogunsuyi has described his first-team Sunderland matchday squad involvement as “a dream come true.”

Following impressive form, the U21 forward got the call to travel with Régis Le Bris’ side for the recent league fixtures against Portsmouth, Plymouth and Middlesbrough.

“Those experiences will live with me forever,” Trey explained. “Being a part of that environment in terms of the travelling, training, the dressing room, it teaches you a lot. The group have been really good to me every time I’ve made that step up.

“There is a lot I can learn from these lads. Ahmed [Abdullahi] came to our fixture against Mönchengladbach and spoke to me at half time. He had a lot of advice to give which I really appreciated. We spoke about positioning and getting those small advantages over the defenders. These guys are experienced and anything I can learn from them is really helpful.”

The 18-year-old signed his first professional contract on Wearside at the start of 2024 after leading the line for the U18s led to a permanent place in Graeme Murty’s U21 side.

The frontman went on to bag the winner in the PL2 Play-Off semi-final against Reading and further made his bout on the international stage featuring for Belgium’s U18s.

Ogunsuyi continued: “These last few years have been a real step forward in my development. I have had experiences that I have dreamt of for a very long time. I know this is just the beginning for me. I still have a lot of learning to do.”

The U21s travel to Fulham for Friday night football, this evening, in the Premier League 2, looking to get back to winning ways after a previous defeat to Everton. Ogunsuyi believes the young Black Cats are prepared to bounce back and build some momentum collectively and individually.

“We know it will be a tough game, they have started the season well but we have confidence within the side to go there and win. A lot of work has gone in this week and the group has this togetherness through victory and defeat.

“All the coaches are really supportive. Murty and John (Hewitson) are brilliant with me. It is a learning curve adapting from U18s football to then playing in the PL2 and the challenge of training with the first team. It’s a challenge I am enjoying and hope continues for a very long time.”
