Rangers captain James Tavernier has acknowledged that abuse from supporters can go ‘too far’ at times, but it is not something he will ‘dwell’ on as he attempts to regain form at Ibrox. He has been with the Glasgow giants since 2015 and has served the team well.

The 32-year-old has made 469 appearances across all competitions and scored 126 goals, 25 of which came last season. He is under contract with the Scottish Premiership club until 2026, so he still has a couple of years left on his contract.

In an interview with Sky Sports, the Rangers player stated: “Rangers have always provided me that platform to play my football and the foundations to accomplish something that a lot of people would like to do, so I’ve always had a tremendous debt to pay, but it’s football. If teams come in, they come in, but I am completely focused on the task at hand and know I still have a lot to accomplish.”

He continued, “It’s part of the deal with football. You see that all around the country. As supporters, they want to express their frustration. You can understand people’s frustration, and certainly, we as players are also unhappy.

“We never go out there wanting to lose a game, or even draw a game – especially playing for Rangers we always want to win. We will always give our 100 per cent effort to that cause. On certain days it can go too far but it is something in the past, it is not something I dwell on.

I always keep looking forward and obviously, it motivates me more to do better.” Tavernier was linked with a move away over the summer but nothing materialised in the end. His long-term future remains up in the air but the next chance he will get to leave to a team in the UK is January.

Rangers triumphed 3-0 at home against Dundee last time out, and he scored his first goal of the season from the penalty spot, which should improve his confidence. Meanwhile, forward Cyreil Dessers scored twice.

They are now third in the league table, trailing Celtic and Aberdeen. Philippe Clement’s side has ten points from their first five games as they try to overtake their rivals in the coming weeks and months.

Tavernier received a round of applause from the fans after coming off against Dundee, and Clement said, “It’s normal. He played a good game and deserved it. Perhaps after the Celtics game, a few people crossed a line, which is not good.

“I understand your frustration. But there are many others that recognize Tav’s worth to this team, which is also beneficial for him to feel. But that is the life of a captain in a large club.”
