The absence of Ian Maatsen from Aston Villa since his summer transfer from Chelsea

has not gone unnoticed by Borussia Dortmund.

If Ruhr 24 and BVBWLD, who both covered the defender today and how he would

have been better off going back to Germany, are any indication, that is.

To begin, the latter wonder if Maatsen “miscalculated” by selecting Aston Villa

over Dortmund in the summertime. He reportedly played as Maatsen’s “shooting star.”

in the second half of the previous season

when on loan from Chelsea, amassing an incredible stat line of three goals and two assists

in 23 games. However, he has only been used as a “bench warmer” at Aston Villa thus far.

He’s trailing Lucas Digne in the standings, having played just 107 minutes in the Premier League

so far. He’s also played three minutes in the Champions League and started the EFL Cup

match against Wycombe Wanderers.

That’s a little sum for a player who cost the Bundesliga club more than €45.5 million

to sign from Chelsea in the summer.

Although Maatsen has stated he doesn’t regret the transfer, BVBWLD contend that

He has a “very good” chance of finding a team in Dortmund, as they are in need of a left defender.

Put differently, he ought to have joined them instead of Aston Villa.

Ruhr 24 goal goes a bit farther, stating that the “dream player” for Dortmund has a

“nightmare in England.” They claim that although their “love affair” did not finish happily,

the player and Dortmund had a “love affair” the previous season and that he is now a

“bench warmer” in England. The German team finds that bothersome since they have a

“left-back problem.”

They were even prepared to overlook the 22-year-old’s “occasional defensive deficiencies.”

since Maatsen would have taken care of it. They call it “sad” and “particularly bitter.”

that the player isn’t playing well for Aston Villa, adding that they might use elite reinforcements

at left back given Nico Schlotterbeck isn’t doing well there right now.

They appear to be extremely resentful of the situation overall.

and they have grown even more so after seeing him fail to persuade Unai Emery at Villa Park.
