‘Exceptional’: Newcastle United secure ‘crucial’ agreement after Leicester City move
Newcastle United have confirmed the appointment of Diarmuid O’Carroll as their new
under-21s lead coach after reaching a compensation agreement with St Mirren.
Ben Dawson had resigned in July to become a member of Steve Cooper’s backroom crew
at Leicester City, leaving the role vacant. Since then, professional development coach Neil Winskill
and head of coach development Jack Ross have assumed temporary leadership roles.
Winskill will now take on a new role as the academy’s head of technological development.

Diarmuid exclaimed, “I’m really excited to come in.” I’m excited to dive right in

The 37-year-old comes from St. Mirren of the Scottish Premiership, where he served
as Stephen Robinson’s assistant manager. Under former Magpies player Michael O’Neill,
Diarmuid will continue in his capacity as senior coach for Northern Ireland.
“I’m delighted Diarmuid has accepted the opportunity to become Lead Coach of Newcastle
United Under-21s,” stated Steve Harper, the academy director of Newcastle.
“As a young, forward-thinking, and driven coach, he will be instrumental in facilitating
our talent pipeline into the first team.
“I would also like to express my gratitude to Jack Ross, Neil Winskill,
and all those associated with the Under-21 team for their diligent efforts and cooperative
approach during the recruitment process for this role.

Diarmuid was born in Killarney, and he played professionally in Scotland, England,
Iceland, and Northern Ireland. The Republic of Ireland gave him an under-21 cap.
He started his coaching career in women’s football with Crusaders and Glentoran.
