Newcastle United reach compensation agreement after Leicester City departure – official announcement imminent
Newcastle are reportedly close to recruiting St Mirren assistant manager Diarmuid O’Carroll to fill the vacancy left by Ben Dawson’s
departure to Leicester City this summer. Former Sunderland manager Jack Ross and Neil Winskill had been taking command of United’s
second-string side on a temporary basis, but it now appears that a new permanent lead coach has been hired. According to sources in
Scotland, Newcastle has reached a compensation arrangement with St Mirren to allow O’Carroll to join their academy. The 37-year-old
was absent from St Mirren’s 2-1 Scottish Premiership victory over Hearts on Saturday, leaving former Newcastle player Brian Kerr to
assist boss Stephen Robinson on an interim basis.
O’Carroll played for the Republic of Ireland and Celtic as a youth before moving on to Ross County, Morecambe, and Airdrie United in his
professional career. Later in his career, he played for Iceland and Northern Ireland before retiring in 2018.
He is also a member of Michael O’Neill’s coaching team for Northern Ireland at the international level, though it is unclear whether he will
remain in that role after transferring to Newcastle. An official statement is expected in due course. It comes after a summer of upheaval at
Little Benton, with new coaching appointments at all levels. Chris Moore took over as Under-18s head coach when Graeme Carrick left to
join Middlesbrough in the summer. Jack Brazil also joined the program as Under-16s coach after Ian Bogie left earlier in 2024.
