Brendan Rodgers took a clear dig at Rangers as he named Falkirk the best side his Celtic team have faced this season.

Celtic recorded a resounding 3-0 victory against the Gers at Parkhead earlier this season and ran out 5-2 winners against Falkirk in the Scottish League Cup on Sunday [22 September].

Rodgers conducted his post-match interview with Premier Sports [22 September] and took a brutal swipe at Rangers by naming Falkirk as the best opposition his side has played.

He said: “Falkirk, I’ve really enjoyed analysing them and watching them because in terms of a football idea and the game, what John’s [McGlynn] doing they’re probably the best team that we’ve played this season in terms of how they want to work the game and how they want to work the ball.”

Brendan Rodgers jibe at Rangers makes no sense

How can a side that conceded five goals, with four in 14 minutes in the second half, be a better opponent than Rangers?

If Rodgers meant for his comments to be a jibe at Rangers or not, who knows, but he has disrespected the Light Blues by discrediting the side in favour of a team who plies their trade in the Scottish Championship.

Philippe Clement will have his chance for revenge with Rangers now likely to face Celtic in the Scottish League Cup final should all go to plan. The Belgian should drill the footage of Rodgers into the heads of each of his players.

The gulf in class between the two sides in Glasgow was damning at Parkhead, granted. The finances at Ibrox have not made easier the task of bridging the gap to Celtic and the supporters will hope the reports of the club seeking alternative investment bear fruit and the Gers can find the cash to bring top-quality talent to the side.

Celtic are lightyears ahead of Rangers for the time being but, if the players needed a boost ahead of a potential League Cup final or when Rodgers’s side travel to Ibrox in January, his latest comments should light a fire under the belly of all those at the Light Blues.
