Just in: Former Rangers defender Danny Wilson says he attempted to convince Auston Trusty to move to Ibrox instead of Celtic.
Trusty signed for Brendan Rodgers’ side on a permanent deal from Sheffield United in the summer transfer window, after previous links to the Gers last year.
The American instead went to Bramall Lane from Arsenal before moving to Parkhead, and free agent defender Wilson reveals how he tried to persuade his former Colorado Rapids teammate to switch to the blue side of Glasgow in 2023.
He told the Daily Record [22 September]: “I spoke to Auston last year when the Rangers interest was there. I didn’t think he’d end up at Ibrox as I always felt he’d want to test himself in the Premier League.
“I touched base with him to see if there was anything in it – but he wasn’t giving too much away. I’d have preferred if he was on the other side of the city. But he’ll do well at Celtic.”
Rangers missed out on Auston Trusty
Rangers will be hopeful they will not be left to rue missing out on a deal for Trusty a year ago, as a Premier League opportunity presented itself to the Arsenal fringe player.
Now in Glasgow but with Brendan Rodgers’ men, Trusty has made his Champions League debut but has not yet secured a regular spot in the side, which he may have found it easier to nail down at Ibrox.
Rather than Celtic beating Rangers to their dual target, this one seems more a case of timing, with Trusty going in favour of what turned out to be a 32-appearance season in the Premier League in the summer of 2023 – even if the Blades performed terribly.
With Chris Wilder’s side rearranging their own squad, Celtic made their move and were able to find the deal for the USMNT man more affordable than Clement’s side, who had to rely on multiple sales which did not arrive until late on.
