Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris has questioned whether his team’s match against Middlesbrough constitutes a derby, citing Newcastle

United as the Black Cats’ primary rivals.

Following his appointment as manager of The Stadium of Light in the summer, the Frenchman is now poised to face Boro for the first

time. The two clubs, both from the North East of England, will face off on Saturday afternoon. Ahead of that game in Sunderland, the

question of whether the match is a derby has resurfaced. Now, Le Bris has been questioned about that particular topic of discussion before

important derby in my knowledge is Newcastle. Middlesbrough will be a fascinating fixture, but I’m not sure if it’s a derby for the

supporters and fans.”

When asked if the close proximity of the two clubs will add extra edge to the encounter, Le Bris replied, “I don’t know for the players. For

me, every game is enjoyable because it presents a new challenge, and each challenge is interesting. For the players, I’m not sure; we’ll see.

Sunderland are second in the Championship table and will be seeking to rebound from their 3-2 loss to Plymouth Argyle last weekend.

Prior to then, the Black Cats had opened the season with four consecutive league wins, totaling 12 points from five games.

Middlesbrough, meanwhile, has eight points from their first five league games and is unbeaten in their previous three.

As a result, they enter the weekend in tenth in the current standings, one point behind the play-off spots.

It appears that Le Bris is making a reasonable appraisal of the issue here.

The Frenchman has had a successful start as Sunderland manager, and he will want to keep the club’s fans on board.
