Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard was regarded as a potential Reds manager after impressing at Rangers, and it has now been alleged Gerrard thought Ibrox outdid Anfield on European evenings.

Former Rangers chairman Dave King claimed Steven Gerrard sensed nothing compared to the atmosphere at Ibrox on a European night, even his beloved Anfield.

Gerrard, 44, spent the majority of his stellar playing career at Liverpool, and he was even tipped as a future Reds manager after leaving the club in 2015 after over 700 games.

The former midfielder began his managerial career in Scotland, with Rangers, after finishing his playing career in

America. He won the Scottish Premiership in 2020/21 before an unsuccessful spell at Aston Villa, which was initially viewed as a perfect stepping stone to succeed Jurgen Klopp on Merseyside.

His decision to depart for a chance in the Premier League infuriated fans, but King now says Gerrard never intended to quit Rangers in 2021.

“Let’s be clear: Steven was not prepared to go when he went. “Steven wanted to defend the title, so I extended his contract at his request,” King told The Sun.

“He still says Anfield can’t compete with Ibrox on a European night.” We agreed that we would respect each other, and he approached me and said, ‘Look, I’d like to extend’. “He was pleased at the club. His goal was to defend the crown. After defending the title and enjoying a successful European run, he could move on to the rest of his career, having used Rangers as a springboard to obtain some extremely valuable first-hand experience.

“Steven was completely kicked out. I have no doubts about that.”

King, who brought Gerrard to Ibrox in 2018, went on to lament the fact that the Scottish club has “regressed” since losing their previous manager.

Philippe Clement is the current Gers manager; he was appointed in October after Michael Beale, Gerrard’s former assistant, was fired. Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Gerrard’s initial replacement, similarly failed to impress in the hot seat.

King continued, “It is absolutely true that we fell backwards since it wasn’t just Steven who left. It was support staff and the structures he had established. “It was all about the club’s ethos and standards. Then we started going down from there. He’s got the spine, the club, and everything of that.”
