The Cowboys have changed the middle of their defensive line by signing defensive tackle Carlos Watkins from the Commanders practice

squad.

Watkins, who played 27 games for the Cowboys in 2021-22, replaces Jordan Phillips, who was placed on injured reserve due to a wrist

injury.

If Phillips is cleared to play, he will be eligible to return after four games (on October 27 in San Francisco). The Cowboys haven’t said how

serious Phillips’ injury is, despite the fact that he was acquired by trade in August during training camp.

Watkins joins the defense as a recognizable face, despite having previously played in Dan Quinn’s defensive system. Watkins left for

Arizona in free agency in 2023, spending one season with the Cardinals before rejoining Quinn in Washington. He was placed on the

practice squad, but he did play against the Giants last week.

Watkins has a seven-year career, the first four of which were spent in Houston.

Watkins had his greatest year of his career with the Cowboys in 2021, recording a personal high of 32 tackles, 17 of which were solo. He

also had his sole career interception and touchdown, a pick-six against the Saints.

He left for the Cardinals in 2023, but a biceps injury necessitated season-ending surgery, limiting his season to only two games.
