JUST IN: Rivals in the Celtic Champions League fire their manager following a terrible outcome
Sergej Jakirovic was fired as manager of Dinamo Zagreb following their disastrous Champions League performance.
Bayern Munich thrashed Celtic 9-2 in Germany on Tuesday night, crushing their European rivals.
For the champions of Croatia, who will play the Celtics on December 10,
it was a devastating first-day outcome.
And despite leading the Croats to a league and cup double the previous season, manager Jakirovic has paid a price with his job.
After six games, Zagreb is presently one point behind leaders Hajduk Split and Rijeka in the SuperSport HNL.
But Jakirovic was fired after just over a year in leadership, and later this year,
Brendan Rodgers will encounter a new face at Maksimir Stadium.
A statement from the club verified this: “GNK Dinamo would like to notify the public that a mutual termination of the contract has been agreed upon with Sergej Jakirovic, the former coach of the Blues.
Sandro Perković, a former member of the professional staff,
will lead the first team until a new long-term coaching solution is decided.
“From the bottom of our hearts, we appreciate all that Sergej Jakirović has done for our club
and we wish him luck and success in his future endeavors.
We hereby make a plea to the public and media to show compassion for Sergej Jakirović and his family and to avoid making an already tense situation worse.”
“First of all, I want to thank Sergej Jakirović for all the results he achieved,
” stated Velimir Zajec, president of Dinamo.
Our collaboration was enjoyable, and I am left with the idea that he is a kind man.
I wish him well in his future endeavors.
“Remaining human and prioritizing Dinamo’s interests is crucial in these circumstances.
At this trying time for Dinamo, it is now up to all of us to choose wisely when choosing a new coach and get back to winning.”
