Just In : Leeds player given golden chance for first start v Cardiff after new update today
During the summer transfer window, Leeds United added a number of new players to their roster,
with players coming from all across Elland Road.
The Whites are once again among the favorites to win the championship after just missing out on
Premier League promotion the previous season.
But following a dismal 2024–25 season in which they are currently ranked ninth in the Championship,
several concerns have been raised over Daniel Farke and his team.
True, a few of his recent additions haven’t yet been included in the starting lineup,
but the season is still young and things could yet change.
During the pre-game press conference for the Cardiff City match, Farke provided an update on injuries and
said that Junior Firpo had been “struggling” with his MCL [Leeds Live, September 19].
This might potentially open the door for Isaac Schmidt to start.
Isaac Schmidt has a fantastic opportunity to make his Leeds United debut.
In what was dubbed the “most significant” acquisition in their history,
the defender was acquired from FC St Gallen near the close of the window [FCSG, 30 August].
The 24-year-old has only been a reserve for
the West Yorkshire team and hasn’t played yet.
Throughout his professional career, Schmidt has played virtually everywhere on the pitch,
making him a bit of an all-around player.
But he was moved to Elland Road to cover for Firpo, and he’ll probably play there when called upon.
Despite Farke’s optimism of the Spaniard being fit, if Firpo isn’t 100 per cent for the game against
the Bluebirds, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the German call upon the former Switzerland youth international.
This is the perfect chance for Schmidt to show Farke what he’s been missing and could be
a turning point in Leeds’ season, especially if he can replicate his form from St Gallen.
